Chapter 21

The scenery outside was about as nice as the first time we’d come here. The vomit smell had faded, but someone’s dog had dropped a turd on the sidewalk a few feet from us, and no one had bothered scooping it up. And on top of that, the sky was gray and heavy, like it was about to rain.

I leaned against the rough brick of the building. “Tell me what you’re thinking,” I said. “Because to be honest, I’m a little bit lost. I know the man means a lot to you and all. But it’s not like you to let friendship override your common sense. Else you wouldn’t have pushed back on me so hard when I got it in my head to save Holly Bennett.”

“You were right about Holly Bennett in the end, if you’ll remember,” said Father Keller. His small smile warmed me up a little inside, despite everything. “But no, I’m not as naive as all that. I truly believe Gideon has good intentions—he and all the rest of them. And I would hope you’ve learned to trust my instincts about people by now. But…” He sighed and stared down at the cracked concrete that led up to the front door.

“But you know what they say about good intentions,” he finished with a rueful chuckle. There was more rue than chuckle in it. “It may be that they truly deserve our help. But as much as it pains me to say it, the chance also exists that Gideon and the others are doing something in our city that Jarvis would be better off without. In either case, we’re better off sticking close to them for the time being. Gideon already knows and trusts me. That will make it easier to gather information.”

My eyebrows jumped up. This wasn’t the conversation I’d been planning on having. I should have known better than to underestimate Father Keller.

“The Inquisition is going to keep on coming,” I reminded him. “I don’t want you in the line of fire.”

“I would just as soon avoid that fate myself,” he said with a smile. “But we all do what we must. For now, we follow through on our original agreement with Gideon. Whether he turns out to be friend or foe, the Inquisition and their Candy Apple are a problem that needs to be dealt with. We do have another client, remember.”

Right. Tish. I wondered how she’d feel about knowing that on top of losing their home and living on rats, she and her family were up against the Inquisition. Maybe I wouldn’t tell her that bit until the job was done.

“We stop the Inquisition, then.” I shook my head slowly. “Weren’t you the one lecturing me a few weeks back about going up against threats I wasn’t equipped to face?”

“Talk to Juliana,” Father Keller suggested. “She may have some ideas.”

“She’s first on my list.” And since I wasn’t feeling too eager to go back up there and hug it out with Gideon, I had nothing else to do but get on that.
